Picture this: ![]() I am on vacation in Costa Rica. I sit in the shade on a mountainside patio with a spectacular view of greening hills, the deep blue waters of the Pacific Ocean, and two far-off volcano peaks wreathed in white clouds that lay soft against the crystal blue sky. A gentle breeze whispers through the gardens, while butterflies and hummingbirds dance among the purple/pink/orange blossoms. I breathe in the sweet perfume of jasmine. The air sings with monkey calls, cricket chirps, and the trilling of brightly feathered birds. At my side: a chilled fruit smoothie made with mango, pineapple, and papaya that were fresh-picked yesterday. My wife lolls in a nearby hammock, gently rocking as she reads. Ahhh. This is a moment of great Happiness and contentment.... Real Life?
Hmm. I was on vacation, living in another world, enjoying a moment created purely for my pleasure. This was not Real Life...yet it was real Happiness. And I so appreciated that moment of pleasure, since it was hard earned, just like in real life. In fact, many aspects of our Costa Rican vacation reminded me of the complexities involved in finding Happiness. Getting Lost on the Road to Happiness
Fact: street signs do not exist in Costa Rica; in fact, there's no such thing as street NAMES in Costa Rica, or for that matter addresses. Directions to anywhere are given in relation to landmarks. One place we stayed was, "400mtr west and then 300mtr south of the main entrance to the US Embassy. If you pass the Supermercado, you've gone too far." Another day our directions were, "turn right when you see the bakery. When you come to the end of the paved road, keep going another kilometer, almost until you see a big tree on your right. Turn left after the pink condominium. Keep driving until you come to paved road again, and then turn into the second driveway." Needless to say, we got lost. A lot. And isn't that just like real life? Someone tells us about a "place" to find Happiness, but there are no signs. And even when we think we are following directions well, it turns out that landmarks have changed and we're back on our own. So there were moments of frustration on the road to Happiness. Fortunately some of the other lessons from our trip more than made up for the uselessness of maps. (note: citizens of Costa Rica call themselves Ticos)

Over the past several weeks I've traveled to Japan, Singapore, and Costa Rica, and encountered businesses that spoke Japanese, Hindi, Chinese, and Spanish. Many of those business people spoke little English, while I was limited to hello/goodbye, yes/no, and Thank You in those four languages. Thus, much of my bartering and buying was accomplished through non-verbal communication: eye contact, gestures, head-shaking, shrugs, and smiles. These communication tools are universally understood - especially the smiles. Even when we could not "communicate" in words, I found myself getting to know much about other people. This one was impatient, this one excited, this one friendly, and so on. And I found myself noticing how easy it was to connect with others once I let go of needing to know the words. Most communication, say the experts, is non-verbal. Yet in our culture we spend most of our time in our heads, in language and words. Leaders who venture into the 'foreign territory' of emotional and non-verbal communication are exponentially more effective than those who spend hours crafting precise messages... but then fail to make eye contact or listen with their body. Lesson: Spend more time watching and listening rather than talking. You will be amazed at how people respond. Remember: Leadership is not about a title. Anyone can be a leader who nurtures and practices a holistic communication style and who learns to connect to people on an emotional and non-verbal level. People don't want to be talked at - they yearn for connection. Plug into the other's humanity, and they will gladly follow you anywhere. |

Here's what some early readers have said about the book: "Congrats Jim! I so love your book. Carry it with me all the time and read a little each day to start my day. I have researched all submissions and made my personal selections. On the list you will find what I'm taking to the beach this year, along with reviews of other books I've read since SRL 2008, PLUS the compiled list of all suggestions, so you can make your own Summer Selections at the bookstore. Many people have written over the years to say that the SRL itself is a fun read. So whether you use this list to help you make your own selections, or simply use it to pick up the basics so you can hold your own at cocktail parties, I offer Summer Reading List 2009. |

As we drove across the countryside, we passed mile after mile of little trees in straight rows, tacked with barbed wire to form fencing. It seemed odd, until we learned what's really going on. Farmers and ranchers fell trees, cut them into posts, and build their fences. But then it rains for five months...and those seemingly dead logs, sitting in waterlogged soil, put out roots and shoots. For this reason, Costa Rica is called The Land of Living Fences.
I was so thrilled to sell out the first print run of my new book, Happiness At The Speed of Life: 13 Powerful Strategies for Finding Happiness At Home And On The Job.
Can you believe that I've been compiling this Summer Reading List (SRL) for 10 years? What started as a casual, "hey, you got any recommendations for some great beach books?" has generated over 150 pages of literary ideas from coaching and consulting colleagues over the past decade. Like always,
