, You've probably noticed a theme in my writing over the past month: "Make Next Year Better" in November, reflection on a "Year of Wisdom" in December. Yep, I'm in planning mode, and I invite you to join me there.

A week before Christmas in 2009, doctors discovered my wife had a large brain tumor. Our priorities shifted quickly, she had surgery on Christmas Eve, and my highest priority for most of January was supporting her recovery.

I went to work each day and served my customers, but by April, my business was nearly dead. I could have blamed it on the economy at the time, but I knew the truth. I'd never taken the time to PLAN my year. My planning time, traditionally over the holiday break, was spent looking at MRIs rather than looking at the year ahead.

The upside of the experience (and my wife is now tumor free, by the way) is that I am now very certain of the link between PLANNING for success and ACHIEVING it. I do planning for my business; in addition, Cheryl and I take a full day in early January each year to reflect on our life and plan ahead for a great year.
