I. Fourteen Reasons You Don't Need Self Improvement

**RANT WARNING

rant in progressThis article emerged following an in-house talk at which I was heckled by a member of the audience who is a senior manager at the organization (notice that I deliberately did not use the word, Leader). He accused me of "making people feel insecure" in order to fill my coaching practice.

At first I thought he was joking, given that the core of my message was about positivity and leveraging strengths; when he came up to me afterward to further push his point, I realized he was quite serious. It seemed important to him to win the argument that he self-created.

What stopped me from smacking him [] was the presence of the HR Director, who whispered, "It's easy to believe you're perfect when you have zero self awareness." Given new context, it was all I could do to keep myself from laughing aloud as the manager explained why neither he nor anyone in his division needed any help from a coach.

I wrote this post in his honor.

Anyone Can Be a Coach

I am a solopreneur - an entrepreneur solely responsible for the development, marketing, sales, and delivery of my services. So in a sense, everything that I do is about managing my brand and supporting my business. I would love for you to hire me as your coach.

That point made, I am ALSO a huge supporter of coaching as both a profession and a mindset. Therefore, I subscribe to Thomas Leonard's philosophy that "everyone is a coach."

Any time you say to someone, "can you help me with this?" you are essentially giving that person permission to coach you. Through that lens, you might realize that you have been giving coaching and receiving coaching from others your entire life.

As you read this article, then, I invite you to read the word "coach" to include both the service of a trained, credentialed professional coach like me as well as the more open interpretation of anyone in your life who in that moment can help you advance.

Some people do not need a coach. Here is how to tell if that's you:
  1. You have achieved all your career goals and have complete career security.
  2. You are fully balanced and healthy in all of your life choices.
  3. You have no stressors in your life.
  4. All your personal, professional, and familial relationships are solid and positive and exactly where you wish them to be.
  5. You never experience doubt.
  6. You are always on time, both in schedule and in project management.
  7. You've got your act totally together.
  8. You love yourself fully and unconditionally.
  9. You've finished learning everything you will ever need for now and your future.
  10. Everyone in your world loves and respects you.
  11. You love and respect everyone in your world.
  12. You possess both the courage and the wisdom to accomplish all you need to or want to accomplish in the world.
  13. You are totally comfortable being vulnerable.
  14. You are in touch with your life purpose and the bigger Truth.

If this is you, Congratulations! You are among the less than .1% of the population who would not benefit from working with a coach, a friend, a partner, or anyone else, because you have achieved Perfection.

Do This For Yourself

Feel free to print out the above and share with any perfect people in your world so that they can appreciate what a rare gift they are to the rest of us.

AND: I invite you to use it as a checklist for yourself as you work on your personal improvement goals for 2015.

Have fun with your own coaching journey!

III. In the Workplace: Don't Mistake Power For Leadership

While leading a full-day workshop on Emotional Intelligence for a healthcare client last week, we had to break for an emergency All-Hands meeting on Ebola readiness.

The doctor who led the meeting was manager of no one in the room. It became clear to me that she had two goals. One was to shift the emotional space of hundreds of people to a place where they could hear the FACTS she had to share on this scary disease. The other was to influence the group's thinking and behavior without resorting to mandate.

I am a social-emotional leaderThe president of the organization sat quietly to the side to show support. It seemed their joint goal was to achieve the desired outcome through conversation and influence, not the exercise of raw power or directive.

It was a beautiful demonstration of emotional and social intelligence in a highly charged situation, as well as a great example of the difference between leadership and management.

Remember, Leadership is not about a title. Anyone can be a Leader who leverages positive influence to help others achieve their own and the organization's goals.
