What if there’s a different path to success?

Happy New Year!

Today I initiate a 13-week experiment in communication. You are my test group. Let me explain.

For 13 years I’ve issued a monthly essay on Leadership, Happiness, and/or Coaching. It works, so why tinker with it, right? But what if there’s another way? I can’t know if I don’t try.

So during the first quarter of 2015 I will continue my monthly essay AND the other ten weeks send you a tidbit that will take under a minute to read. To ensure I remain concise, I’ve chosen a handful of tweets from my own archive as the starting points for the weekly message.

I will also play with some different formats, though always keeping to less than 250 words of content.

At the end I will invite you to a quick survey for your feedback.

Thanks for playing along!

Week 1 (209 words)

“#44: To thrive in the world, practice stepping into the unknown.
P.S. You do this already (unless you're blessed with a script each morning!)”
Excerpt From: Jim Smith. “Coaching is so Tweet.” iBooks.

The truth of the world is that we never really KNOW what’s going to happen. We predict things based on past patterns, e.g. my friend will do X, that woman will be rude, I will be ‘stuck’ in rush hour traffic, etc. So we brace ourselves for what we expect will happen. And we get what we expect.

What if you let go of your old stories and approached every day as a blank page, as an exciting unknown that is going to unfold on its own?
  • Maybe that woman is “rude” because you show up every day with a sour look on your face, reacting in advance – so change your face!
  • Or your friend does X because you always do W (and of course X follows!) – so try doing Q and see what happens.
  • What if you start listening to audiobooks to transform your commute time for personal growth or entertainment, such that you look forward to traffic?
Try breaking your own pattern, and notice how when you change your script, you change your outcomes.
