Special Request: Can you give me three minutes on PURPOSE?

Published: Wed, 12/14/16

Happy day, tribe members! THIS IS A RARE DIVERSION from my usual messaging — a REQUEST for your input.

(Time to read Short Version: 30 seconds plus 3 minutes for survey.  Long Version: 1.7 minutes plus 3 for survey)

CONTEXT

At the intersection of Happiness, Leadership, and Coaching we often find something important: Purpose, the Why, the reason for…whatever you’re doing.
I am partnering with an executive coach in India, launching a global research project to understand the use and impact of Purpose in organizations.  I am reaching out to you with a simple request to get us started.

If you participate in this 3 min survey and/or forward to others, you will be included in later communications of our findings.  NOTE: you need not be a business leader or business owner to participate; purpose affects everyone.

In Gratitude for your time and energy, Jim Smith and Rajat Garg

That all seems obvious, right?

4Qs: Who, What, Why, How?

Who Are We?

Rajat Garg, MCC, is an executive coach based in Mumbai, province of Maharashtra, India

Jim Smith, PCC, SPHR is an executive coach based in Cleveland, state of Ohio, USA

We share a passion for leadership and engagement in organizations of all sizes.
What is Purpose?

Level 1—Profit:  In the beginning was the Financial Bottom Line—what is left over after all expenses are covered.  In the non-profit world this may be called surplus or difference.
Level 2—Triple Bottom Line (3BL): Then came the 3BL of Profit, People, and Planet, adding Social and Environmental metrics to the Financial.  These three metrics look outward.
Level 3Quintuple Bottom Line (5BL): emerging is the Quintuple Bottom Line, which adds a third, inward-focused, level to assessment of an organization's success.  5BL is Profit, People, Planet, Passion, and Purpose**

Why Is Purpose Important?

Purpose is the Why of an organization, or its motivation beyond stakeholder return.  Anecdotally, we see an intertwining of Passion and Purpose with Employee and Customer Engagement, and we seek to better understand the connection by studying the way Purpose shows up in organizations of all sizes.

How Can You Help?

One, take three minutes to complete our survey, here
NOTE: you need not have a defined Purpose to participate.

Two, pass this note forward to someone else you think should be included in the conversation, or to someone leading an organization you sense has a Purpose that drives them.

Three, send to Jim or Rajat the names of individuals or organizations that you recommend we speak with, who in your experience have a sense of Purpose (formal or informal)

Thank you for your support of this important project.
